Isolated Pawn
An isolated pawn has no pawn on either neighbouring file, so no pawn can ever defend it. On the queen’s file it buys open lines and space in return, and the game turns on whether that activity outlasts the weakness.
Key ideas
- A piece, not a pawn, must guard it
- The square in front of it is a fine post for the other side
- Its owner plays for activity before the pieces come off

Dotse Sumya Ibrahim vs Phillip, Kiara
Ibrahim turns a small structural weakness into a commanding advantage. See how Black’s isolated d-pawn becomes a target, how White converts the advantage through active play and exchanges, and how the game ends with a passed pawn promoting into the queen that delivers mate.
